Solving underwater crimes: development of latent prints made on submerged objects.

Underwater crime scenes always present a challenge for forensic researchers, as the destructive effect of water considerably complicates the chances of recovering material of evidential value. The aim of this study is to tackle the problem of developing marks that have been left on submerged objects. Fingermark deposition was randomly made on two surfaces - glass and plastic whilst the material was submerged under tap water and then left for one to fifteen days before drying and development. Distribution of fullerenes (nC60) between sediment and water in freshwaters

Abstract Depending on environmental conditions, fullerenes (nC 60 ) have the potential to settle to the bottom sediments. In this study the distribution of nC 60 was investigated in the labile zone between sediment and water. Three freshwater–sediment systems representing oligohumic, mesohumic, and polyhumic lakes with varying sediment composition and structure were used to investigate the target of fullerenes. The largest portion of water suspended fullerenes was found in the sediment, but a part re-suspended relatively quickly to water-stabile particles associated with natural particles. Hydrodynamic chromatography of macromolecules on small spherical non-porous silica particles

Abstract Non-porous silica spheres with sizes in the range 1.4–2.7 μm were applied as packings for the hydrodynamic chromatography (HDC) of macromolecules. Highly efficient columns, with a reduced plate height below 2, were packed with these small particles. Up to molecular weights of 10 6 the elution behaviour of polystyrenes agreed very well with existing theoretical models. However, for larger polystyrenes the flow-rate exerted an influence on the relative peak positions. The applicability of HDC to rapid separations of soluble macromolecules and inorganic colloids was demonstrated.

Validation of a spectral light scattering method to differentiate large from small particles in intraocular lenses

A psychophysical approach has been designed to measure straylight from intraocular lenses (IOLs) in vitro. This approach uses a clinical straylight meter (C-Quant) and an observer's eye as optical detector. Based on this, we introduced a method for study of straylight-wavelength dependency for IOLs. This dependency can be used to distinguish between 2 types of scattering particles (small and large) as defined by Mie theory. Validation was performed using a turbidity standard and scattering filters. Several IOLs were analyzed to identify potential scattering sources. Dyes of a Shadow Theatre: Investigating Tholu Bommalu Indian Puppets through a Highly Sensitive Multi-Spectroscopic Approach

Tholu Bommalu are typical leather puppets of the traditional Indian shadow theatre. Two of these objects are part of a collection in the International Puppets Museum “Antonio Pasqualino” (Palermo, Sicily, Italy), which can count on one hundred-seventy-three of artifacts. These Indian puppets were investigated to obtain information related to the use of dyes for their manufacturing through a multi-technical approach exploiting the combination of highly sensitive spectroscopic techniques.
